Just finished mixing this song. It’s not the first recording I’ve made of it though, so some might recognise it.

The song is called “Over”. It’s here as a free download so pass it on, and it (or something very similar) will be on the soon-to-be-released Harmonica Lewinsky e.p. too.
The exciting part (for me anyway) is that it’s the most extensive use I’ve made of my plate reverb so far – the percussion, guitars and vocals are all running through it – and in fact I don’t think I used any digital reverb at all now that I think about it.
More geeky stuff about reverb soon. For now enjoy the song.
BeastieMixes.com is a cool site for people who like to remix and mash up Beastie Boys songs (hey that’s me!) and people who like listening to mashups and remixes of Beastie Boys songs (hey that’s me too!) and right now there’s a “Beastie Boys vs Chemical Brothers” contest on, into which anyone can enter two mixes.
The rules are: Remix / Mash any Chemical Brothers song with any Beastie Boys song. That’s it.
I whipped up my first entry last night:
Super Disco Breakin’ vs In Dust We Trust (mp3)

BeastieMixes.com holds these kind of contests a couple of times a year at least, and they’re always fun. Good people. There might even be prizes but it’s not about the prizes. So if you’re into this kind of tomfoolery, get mixing. All the details are here. If you need Beasties acapellas or instrumentals you can find them there too (or ask me, I’ve got a stash).
AND…
If this type of thing is relevant to your interests AND you don’t already have it, go download my Beastie Boys Mashtape,
Misty Mountain Hip-Hop…

… which is kind of a Hip-Hop Rock n Roll thing I made a while back, mashing the Beasties with Led Zeppelin, White Zombie, Guns n Roses and Sonic Youth. Enjoy.
nuff said really.

I usually get this done a bit earlier in the year but meh – here’s the 2009 version.
Actually here’s the first 2009 version – expect remixes.
p.s. earlier versions here.
So I haven’t posted anything over the holidays but I’ve been getting a few projects wrapped up which I’ll post about soon.
Until I do, here’s something that Saul Williams released today. It’s a cool new track, a free download to celebrate President Obama’s inauguration and it’s called The Government.

I’m linking directly to the file because his site can get a bit janky to navigate but if you prefer it’s www.saulwilliams.com
The release also states
“The full composition as well as the isolated ‘stems’ are available for download below. Send us your remixes and we’ll post them for listening on saulwilliams.com..or just enjoy the composition!”
but I haven’t found the stems on his site yet. Maybe they’re on itunes? If you find them let me know, I’d love to remix this.
The good people at Kowtow music are hosting a b-side podcast I recorded for them the other day.
It’s a half hour mix of b-side treats old and new. Check it out here or over at kowtow.co.nz.
Peace out.
If you don’t know kowtow, they’re a Wellington-based clothing label who do some very, very sweet t-shirt prints.
They also put out these CD compilations – 3 of them so far – buy a shirt, get the CD for free. It’s all tasty NZ stuff in a dubby-trip hoppy-electro vein from artists like Olmecha Supreme, Opensouls, Electric Wire Hustle and a few cuts from us at b-side as well.
And right now (for October I believe) if you subscribe to their mailing list you can win all 3 CDs. For nothing!
The kowtow music blog is well worth keeping up with anyway. Lots of music news, podcasts and such. Check-a-check it out.
Especially in the car.
So from now on, whenever you buy a CD from this site, you get a free tape for the car. What’s on the tapes will vary – at the moment they’re Baldwin Fun Machine songs.
See how cool that will look sliding around on the dash with all your other crap?
