Astute listeners and readers will have already noticed that I haven’t posted any musicology shows for a few weeks. You may have thought I’d been having a break but you’d have been wrong.
I’ve been having a lot of fun with the shows but I’ve been finding it increasingly restrictive balancing the two formats – the live radio broadcast and the downloadable podcast – and I think that both formats suffer for the compromise. Knowing that the show is being recorded and archived means there are things I’ve been hesitant to try out in case they go horribly wrong where I should just be taking a risk and doing it anyway for the sake of the live broadcast.
Essentially I think radio works best as a live, immediate medium. One of the greatest music discovery kicks you can ever have is hearing a song in the car while you’re driving home and it sounds so good that when you get to your house you just have to sit there in the dark until the song finishes. You can’t even take your keys out. You can’t even rush inside to switch the radio on for fear of breaking the spell.
That’s the kind of thrill that only live radio can deliver in this age of on-demand media, and I don’t want to dilute it.
So from now on if you want to hear musicology you’ll have to be in Raglan on Tuesday nights. I may still do podcasts if there’s a particular reason to but it definitely won’t be every week and they’ll be posted in the main bside site feed: http://www.bsidebeats.com/feed/ so the podcast feed will become inactive as of now.
Thanks for listening and I hope you’ve enjoyed it. I’ll leave the archive up for a couple of weeks in case anyone wants to download anything. edit: all gone.
p.s. regular bside posting should be resuming shortly…

Tuesday’s radio show was a Ladies’ night special featuring Sharon Jones, Wanda Jackson, and my new favourite singer Betty Davis.
There’s a dedicated feed for the shows now too, so I won’t post them all on this feed as well unless there’s a particular reason to do so.

Righto.
Just posted last night’s radio show here, the theme this week is the spoken word in 20th century music.
Found the first two shows and posted them as well. Now all that’s missing is last week’s show when I recorded two hours of silence.
Live streaming coming soon.
I host a regular Tuesday night radio show here in Raglan (more about that later). I’m going to post recordings of the show here. You can download them or listen online.
It’ll also be streaming live over the interwebs every Tuesday night (NZ time) in a week or two, I’ll let you know when, where, and how.
The shows are about two hours long and just over 100MB wide. Last night’s show was a special on The Residents. Previous shows have focused on the music of Fela Kuti, and on the origins of punk rock.
I intend to do something different every week and I’m open to suggestions. If you have ideas for future shows, tell me in the comments section.
Ok so I’m a bit late to this but every Saturday over at bFM, Dubhead has been running a very interesting documentary series on the history of the station.
Called The bFM Historical Society it’s a series of interviews with people who’ve worked in and around the b over the years, starting in the mid 80s which is about when I started tuning in.
It’s already up to episode 9 but you can easily catch up by downloading them all or listening to them online here.

First, sneak off and find a computer. Which we’ve just done, yeah? I have.
Now just drink until it passes. Here’s a couple of ideas to keep you occupied:
1. Play Auditorium. Speakers on.
2. Watch some hilarious clips of “live” electronic performers faking their shows at deadact.com. Do they think we’re stupid? (Hope that doesn’t ruin your tribal psy-trance raving at the festivals. Or do I?)
3. Listen to some Ricky Gervais podcasts.
Righto.
Illness (both human and machine) has led to a lack of action this week, so I’ve got no new tracks to post. Instead, shout outs to a couple of the NZ radio shows who’ve been playing our tracks and play other good stuff too:
RDU98.5 where Kid90 hosts “The Green Room”, all NZ electronica, Saturday 5-7 pm.
KiwiFM where Fleur Jack hosts “Independent/Alternative/New” weeknights 9-12.
Click though for live streams. Back soon.
