If you don’t know kowtow, they’re a Wellington-based clothing label who do some very, very sweet t-shirt prints.
They also put out these CD compilations - 3 of them so far - buy a shirt, get the CD for free. It’s all tasty NZ stuff in a dubby-trip hoppy-electro vein from artists like Olmecha Supreme, Opensouls, Electric Wire Hustle and a few cuts from us at b-side as well.
And right now (for October I believe) if you subscribe to their mailing list you can win all 3 CDs. For nothing!
The kowtow music blog is well worth keeping up with anyway. Lots of music news, podcasts and such. Check-a-check it out.
Sorry for the delay in posting new stuff last week but dark forces conspired. Now the computers are all running (purged of vista - what a disaster that was), I’m healthy again, and I’ve even got some cool new toys in the studio.
So back into it.
Today I finished mixing this Harmonica Lewinsky track, it’s called “Engine” and it’s the kind of thing you’ll see us playing live this summer.
Illness (both human and machine) has led to a lack of action this week, so I’ve got no new tracks to post. Instead, shout outs to a couple of the NZ radio shows who’ve been playing our tracks and play other good stuff too:
RDU98.5 where Kid90 hosts “The Green Room”, all NZ electronica, Saturday 5-7 pm.
KiwiFM where Fleur Jack hosts “Independent/Alternative/New” weeknights 9-12.
I’ve just found out that a few of the download links on the site weren’t working.
If you’ve tried to download an album or song here lately and it didn’t work, it should now. Please let me know if you find any more bad links.
Vinnie and I are on Waiheke right now for Harmonica Lewinsky rehearsals with Lani and Dione. If we record any new stuff while we’re here I’ll let you know.
It’s been a while since Coya was here in Raglan - I can’t remember if it’s a year or two years ago. She came from Colorado and stayed at our place for a few months and while she claimed to be living in a bivouac on the back porch we’d usually find her on the couch in the morning.
While she was here I recorded so much of her “extreme violin” playing that I’m still finding tracks I’d forgotten recording. On the weekend I found this one and mixed it down, with the two takes of her violin laid on top of each other.
She didn’t like to stand in one spot while playing (or anytime really) so we rigged up a mic holder which let her move around quite freely. As you can see in the pictures it’s made from a golf club, 2 guitar straps, some no.8 wire and lots of tape.
I recorded the first version of this song a year or so back (or was it 2 years?) Anyway last week we re-worked it as a Harmonica Lewinsky song which has meant making it louder and noisier and more intense.
Tonight I felt like taking it the opposite direction and stripping it right back.
I haven’t posted any music this week but there’s a very good reason. Laziness.
And now I’m on Waiheke for more Harmonica Lewinsky practice.
But I have been listening to this podcast that Vinnie pointed me to, and it’s well worth checking out for some really cool exploratory instrumental grooves.
