tribute to peter sauerbier

I’m taking part in a group exhibition in Auckland next month.

Peter Sauerbier Tribute flyer

  • Pierre Peeters Gallery, 251 Parnell Rd.
  • March 9th – April 6th
  • Opening March 9th, 5:30

It’s a tribute to Peter Sauerbier, organised by Sean Kerrigan.

It’s a little bit daunting as I have a huge amount of admiration for the other artists involved, but I suppose my stuff does fit with the general theme of it all.

I shall be exhibiting lamps.

EDIT: Sean has written a more verbose and detailed text about the exhibition here. Also see his comment below.

Oh what can I say except that your work is fabulous…abfab!

I sat down yesterday with the woman at the gallery to try and construct a media release and I just confused her totally. The this morning I wrote my own and I suppose I should publish it on the blog.

Basically above and beyond all things was the simple fact that Peter was able to live successfully at being unsuccessful in usually understood terms and the four of us are able to do that to. Not so much that we eschew success so much as it’s just another tool to acheive that which we think is important. We have all constructed worlds in which we are fairly comfortable to do that which we find worth acheiving… and the found object idea of looking at something another way is somewhat paramount in acheiving such a life.

What Peter made in his life is kind of unimportant next to the fact that he spent his life making it. The stuff itself only works if the people who see it spend enough time wondering how it came into being and even why it came to be. Your stuff completely fulfills that because it raises so many questions without even seeming to ask them.

For me anyways, it’s not about doing wonderful things with the objects I’ve got but why I think they are wonderful in the first place. I’m trying to pare things back and it’s hard for me not to overindulge and lose the spark of individual pieces… but I’m trying…. because your stuff inspired me to do so!
